Kauri is a small place, also called a locality, in Northland, New Zealand. A main road, State Highway 1, goes right through it. To the south is Kamo, and to the north is Hikurangi.

Near Kauri, there's a big old volcano called Mt Parakiore. It's 391 metres (1,283 ft) tall and is about one million years old! It's part of a larger group of volcanoes.

The area was first known as Kaurihohore. People from Nova Scotia came to live here in 1856.

People Living in Kauri

Kauri is home to about 1,866 people, based on the 2023 New Zealand census. This number has grown quite a bit, with 120 more people living here since 2018.

In Kauri, there are slightly more females than males. The average age of people living here is about 46 years old. About 1 in 5 people are under 15 years old, which means there are lots of kids and teenagers!

Most people in Kauri are of European background. About 1 in 5 people are Māori, who are the native people of New Zealand. Some people also have Pasifika or Asian backgrounds.

Almost everyone in Kauri speaks English. A small number of people also speak the Māori language. About 16 out of every 100 people living in Kauri were born in another country.

Learning in Kauri

Kauri has its own school called Kaurihohore School. It's a primary school for children from years 1 to 6. The school has about 100 students.

The first school building was built in 1877. Sadly, it burned down in 1942. But a new school was built and opened in 1948. The school celebrated its 125th birthday in 2002, which is a very long time!
