A Look at Kazimierz Brandys' Life
Early Life and First Steps as a Writer
Kazimierz Brandys was born in Łódź, a city in Poland. He was the brother of another writer, Marian Brandys. Kazimierz later married Maria Zenowicz, who was a translator. He studied law at the University of Warsaw.
His first writings were published in 1935. He wrote about theatre for a magazine called Kuźnia Młodych, which means "Anvil of Youth." After World War II, from 1945 to 1950, he worked for a weekly magazine called Kuźnica (The Smithy).
His Role After World War II
In 1946, Kazimierz Brandys joined the Polish Workers' Party. This was a political group that played a big role in Poland after the war. His writing career really took off when he published a story about the two Warsaw uprisings during World War II.
From 1956 to 1960, he was part of the team for another magazine, Nowa Kultura (New Culture). During this time, he supported the idea of "renewal" and "moral cleansing" within the Polish communist party. This meant trying to make the party better and more honest.
Standing Up for His Beliefs
In 1966, Kazimierz Brandys decided to leave the communist party. He did this to protest against how the government treated Leszek Kołakowski, another important thinker.
He also taught about Slavic cultures at the Sorbonne in Paris during 1970 and 1971. In 1976, he signed a special letter called the "Letter of 59." This letter was a protest against changes being made to the rules of the country, the constitution of the People's Republic of Poland.
From 1977 to 1980, he worked for a magazine called Zapis (The Record). After 1981, he lived outside of Poland. He passed away in Paris in the year 2000.
