Kazutaka Kodaka (Japanese: 小高 和剛, Hepburn: Kodaka Kazutaka, born July 8, 1978) is a Japanese video game designer, writer, and manga artist. He is famous for his unique stories that often mix hope and despair, truth and lies, and serious moments with dark humor. His games are known for having many surprising plot twists! He created the popular Danganronpa game series. After working at Spike Chunsoft, he started his own company called Too Kyo Games in 2017.

About Kazutaka Kodaka

His Early Life

Kazutaka Kodaka was born on July 8, 1978, and has always lived in Tokyo, Japan. When he was young, he didn't have many friends. He spent his free time watching anime. He studied hard, but later found his passion for film. He went to Nihon University College of Art and studied film there.

Kodaka loved playing video games from a young age. Some of the first games he played were Wrecking Crew and Pac-Man. While at university, he worked part-time at a video game store. He first wanted to write movies, but then decided to make video games. He felt it would be easier to create original stories in games. He applied to work at Spike, a game company, hoping to make his own unique game there.

His Career in Games

Working at Spike and Spike Chunsoft

At Spike, Kodaka had an idea for a detective game called Distrust. This idea was similar to Danganronpa. It was about high school students in a "battle royale" style death game. The first idea was too dark, so he changed it. After making some tweaks, his idea was approved, and it became the game Danganronpa.

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc came out on November 25, 2010, for the PlayStation Portable. It sold well, and the company called it a success. Because it was so popular, the game got two sequels: Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair and Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony. It also got a spin-off shooter game, Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls. The series even became an anime called Danganronpa: The Animation, along with novels and manga. Kodaka left Spike Chunsoft in 2017.

Starting Too Kyo Games

After leaving Spike Chunsoft, Kodaka and six other game developers started a new company called Too Kyo Games. Their main goal was to create new game ideas and let the team make their own indie games. Kodaka said the company feels like a fun club activity as much as a business. He also mentioned that he would like to work on the Danganronpa series again someday.

The first game from Too Kyo Games was Death Come True, released in June 2020. Kodaka wrote and directed this game. In 2021, a new game called Master Detective Archives: Rain Code was announced. This game is a team-up with Spike Chunsoft, and Kodaka is one of the writers.

How He Creates Stories

His Creative Ideas

Kodaka says that when he writes, he focuses on the characters. He can only write about characters he likes! But he doesn't start by thinking about characters first. Instead, he first creates a cool and interesting story idea. He likes to be able to explain the main idea of a story in just a few sentences. He believes a strong story idea is key to getting players hooked on a game.

He wants to create stories that feel new and fresh to people. He also thinks about why he is writing a story and what message it should have. He once said that everything he ever wanted to tell can be found in the Danganronpa series.

Kodaka's stories often involve dark themes, like murder. He finds the idea of killing in a story interesting, comparing it to a very dark joke. Many of his characters also have amnesia (memory loss). This helps players connect with the characters easily, as they are learning about the world together.

Who Inspired Him

Kodaka's works often have hints of other artists who influenced him. When he gets stuck while writing, he watches movies, anime, and reads manga to get new ideas. He pays close attention to what interests him in those stories.

He has named famous directors like David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, and the Coen brothers as his main inspirations. Another big influence is Kunihiko Ikuhara, an anime director whose writing Kodaka really admires. Kodaka is also a fan of games by Goichi Suda. He even included one of Suda's games, Twilight Syndrome, in Danganronpa 2 as a tribute.
