Kazuyuki Kyoya (Kyōya Kazuyuki), born on August 13, 1971, is a famous Japanese athlete. He first played football (soccer). Later, he became a successful wheelchair basketball player. He even competed in four Summer Paralympic Games.

Football Star

Kyoya was born in Muroran, Japan. After finishing high school, he joined a football team called Furukawa Electric in 1990. This team later changed its name to JEF United Ichihara. He played many games in 1991.

In 1992, Japan started a new professional football league called the J1 League. Kyoya made his debut in this league in October 1993. He played in a game against Gamba Osaka in the J.League Cup.

However, on November 28, 1993, something unexpected happened. Kyoya was in a traffic accident and hurt his spinal cord. This injury meant he could no longer walk. Because of this, he had to stop playing football.

A New Path: Wheelchair Basketball

In 1994, Kyoya found a new sport: wheelchair basketball. He quickly became very good at it. He represented Japan in the Summer Paralympic Games four times!

He competed in the Paralympics in 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012. After the 2012 Paralympics, he decided to retire from wheelchair basketball.

His Story on TV

Kazuyuki Kyoya's inspiring life story was made into a television movie. It was called Kimi ni Sasageru Emblem, which means An Emblem Dedicated to You. The movie was shown on Fuji TV on January 3, 2017. A famous member of the band Arashi, Sho Sakurai, played Kyoya in the film.
