History of Kearns

Kearns is named after William Kearns. He was a local farmer who owned a large property in the 1800s. His land was first owned by the Tharawal people. They were the original Aboriginal inhabitants of this area.

British settlers took over the land in the 1820s. The land was first called River Hill. By 1828, William Kearns had renamed it Epping Forest. He bought more land nearby. This made his property very large, about 360 acres (146 hectares).

William Kearns started a successful dairy farm and orchard on his land. An orchard is a place where fruit trees are grown. After he passed away in 1880, his family kept the property. They owned it until 1978.

In 1975, the Campbelltown Council started planning a new community here. They decided to name the suburb Kearns. This was to avoid confusion with another Sydney suburb called Epping.

The streets in Kearns were named after famous rivers. You can find streets like Mississippi, Danube, and Yangtze. The first people moved into Kearns in 1985. A primary school was built in 1992.
