History of the Kearny Cottage
This house was built a long time ago in 1781. It was first located on High Street in Perth Amboy. Later, it was moved to Sadowski Parkway. This happened after the last person from the Kearny family who lived there passed away in the 1920s.
The cottage was moved again to its current spot. You can find it at 63 Catalpa Avenue. This location is close to where the Raritan River meets the ocean.
The Cottage Today
The Kearny Cottage has four rooms. It serves as a museum where you can see many items. These items were given by people from Perth Amboy. They help tell the story of the city's history, especially its connection to the sea. There is also a colonial garden on the grounds.
The Kearny Family
The cottage was home to some important people. These included Elizabeth Lawrence Kearny, who was a poet known as Lady Scribblerus. Michael Kearny also lived here.
Lawrence Kearny: The Sailor Diplomat
Their son, Lawrence Kearny, was born and died in this very house. Commodore Kearny was a famous naval officer. He was known for his "open door trade policy" with China. This policy meant that all countries could trade fairly with China. Because of his skills in diplomacy and trade, he was called "the Sailor Diplomat."
Historic Recognition
The Kearny Cottage is recognized as an important historical site. It is listed on both the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places. On these lists, it is known as the Lawrence Kearny House.
