Kedarnath Singh (born 7 July 1934 – died 19 March 2018) was a famous Indian poet. He wrote in Hindi, one of India's main languages. He was also a respected critic and essay writer.

Kedarnath Singh won big awards for his poems. These included the Jnanpith Award in 2013 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1989. His well-known poetry book was called Akaal Mein Saras, which means Cranes in Drought.

Kedarnath Singh's Early Life

Kedarnath Singh was born on 7 July 1934. His birthplace was a village called Chakia in eastern Uttar Pradesh, India. He went to Udai Pratap College in Varanasi for his first degree.

Later, he earned his Master's degree and a Ph.D. from Kashi Hindu Vishwavidyalaya. He worked as a Hindi teacher for some time in Gorakhpur. After that, he became a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. He even led the Hindi Language department there. He lived in New Delhi until he passed away on 19 March 2018.

His Unique Poetic Style

Kedarnath Singh's poems are special because they use simple, everyday words. He used images from daily life to talk about big ideas. His writing style made complex topics easy to understand.

One of his most famous poems is Bagh. This long poem is about a tiger. It was published in the mid-1980s. Bagh is still one of the most read long poems in Hindi literature. Many universities include it in their study programs. A famous critic, Ashok Vajpayee, said Kedarnath Singh was a poet of "both presence and absence, of love and loss."
