Kids Encyclopedia Facts

In the old stories of the Abenaki people, who live in the northeastern United States, there's a creature called the Kee-wakw (sometimes spelled Giwakwa). This legendary being was a huge, human-eating monster. It was said to be part-animal and part-human. The Kee-wakw lived in the deep forests of what is now New England many, many years ago.

What is a Kee-wakw?

The Kee-wakw is a scary figure from Abenaki folklore. Folklore means the traditional stories, beliefs, and customs of a community. These stories were passed down through generations. The Kee-wakw was often described as a very tall and strong creature. It was known for its terrible hunger for humans.

How a Kee-wakw is Formed

Most legends say that Kee-wakw were once regular people. But something terrible happened to them. Their hearts turned to ice, making them cold and uncaring. This change could happen if an evil spirit took over a person. It could also happen if someone did something truly awful.

For example, if a person ate human flesh or let someone starve to death without feeling bad. Once their heart turned to ice, they felt no regret. All they could feel was an endless, terrible hunger. This hunger made them seek out humans to eat.

Other Giant Creatures

The Abenaki stories also mention other giant creatures. One type was called Asinikiwakw. These were not humans who changed. Instead, they were powerful stone giants. They also ate people.

A famous hero in Abenaki stories is Gluskabe. He was a very wise and strong being. Gluskabe was known for helping the Abenaki people. He often fought against dangerous monsters. The legends say that Gluskabe was the one who defeated the fearsome Asinikiwakw. He protected the people from these stone giants.

Where Did Kee-wakw Live?

The Kee-wakw were said to live in the wild, thick forests. These forests covered the area we now call New England. This region includes states like Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The dense woodlands provided perfect hiding places for such a creature.

People would tell stories about the Kee-wakw to warn others. These tales taught important lessons. They often reminded people about the dangers of greed or cruelty. The stories also showed the importance of community and kindness.
