Kee Marcello (born Kjell Hilding Lövbom on February 20, 1960) is a talented Swedish guitarist and singer. He is most famous for being the former guitarist in the hard rock bands Europe and Easy Action. Kee Marcello has also had a successful career as a solo artist.
Kee Marcello's Musical Journey
Kee Marcello played in several bands early in his career, including Stetson Cody Group and Norbom Hilke. He also played with the band Noice. In 1982, he helped form the band Easy Action. They released two albums: Easy Action and That Makes One. Easy Action was the first band from Scandinavia to sign a major record deal with a US label, Sire Records, in 1983.
In November 1986, Kee Marcello joined the famous band Europe. He took the place of their original guitarist, John Norum. Before joining Europe, Marcello had worked with Europe's singer, Joey Tempest. They collaborated on a charity song called "Give a Helpin' Hand" for 'Swedish Metal Aid'. This song was very popular and helped Joey Tempest get his first hit single. This successful teamwork likely led to Marcello being asked to join Europe.
When Marcello joined Europe in 1986, the band was about to become globally famous. Their song "The Final Countdown" became number one in 25 countries. In 1987, Europe started their first world tour, called "The Final Countdown World Tour."
In 1988, Kee Marcello recorded his first album with Europe, Out of This World. They recorded it in London. After the album, they went on the "Out of This World Tour." This tour included shows in the United States with the band Def Leppard.
The band then worked on their next album, Prisoners in Paradise. It was recorded in California and released in 1991. After this, they went on the "Prisoners in Paradise World Tour." In 1992, Europe decided to take a break.
Solo Work and Other Projects
In 1993, Kee Marcello joined a band called Red Fun with Fredrik Von Gerber, who was also the drummer for Easy Action. They released one album, Red Fun. In 1995, Kee Marcello began his solo career. He released his first solo album, Shine On.
From 1997 to 2001, Marcello worked in his own studio, "GEM Studios," in Sweden. He produced and wrote songs for many artists. He helped write the number one hit song "Bang Bang Boom" for the Canadian band The Moffats. He also worked on the title song for Percy Sledge's 2004 album Shining Through the Rain. Additionally, he produced three very successful albums for Swedish singer Pandora in Japan. He also played guitar as a guest on some albums, like the 1999 In Flames album Colony.
In 2003, Kee Marcello released the album Melon Demon Divine under the band name Kee Marcello's K2. This group was a power trio with Ken Sandin on bass and Snowy Shaw on drums. Ken Sandin is still with the band today.
Later in 2003, Europe reunited with their original guitarist, John Norum. Kee Marcello decided not to join the reunion. He explained that he wanted to explore different musical styles. However, he was happy that Europe reformed and continued to play for their fans.
Easy Action reunited for a show at the Sweden Rock Festival in 2006. They also re-released their first album with some live recordings that had not been heard before. Kee Marcello's K2 toured a lot in Europe and the East in 2008 and 2009. They also performed in the 2007 Swedish Eurovision song contest with Alannah Myles.
In 2011, Kee Marcello released his autobiography. His third solo album, Redux: Europe, was released in Sweden in November 2011 and worldwide in January 2012. This album included a new song and new versions of songs from Europe and Easy Action. His fourth solo album, Judas Kiss, came out in April 2013.
In 2016, Marcello signed with the Italian record label Frontiers Records. He released a new solo album called "Scaling Up" in the fall of 2016. This album included two songs from early demo recordings.
In 2017, a new band project called Kee of Hearts was announced. It featured Kee Marcello and Tommy Heart, the singer of Fair Warning. Ken Sandin played bass, and Marco Di Salvia played drums. They released their self-titled album, Kee of Hearts, on September 15, 2017.
Kee Marcello has also been involved in horse racing in Sweden. He continues to perform and create music.
