Keefe Cato's Baseball Journey
Keefe Cato was born in Yonkers, New York. He went to Fairfield University, where he played college baseball for the Fairfield Stags team. He was a really good pitcher in college! He still holds many of Fairfield's pitching records. These include seven career shutouts, which means he pitched seven full games where the other team didn't score any runs. He even threw a no-hitter, a very rare game where no player on the other team gets a hit!
In 1978, Keefe played collegiate summer baseball for the Harwich Mariners in the Cape Cod Baseball League. This league is famous for having some of the best college players in the country.
Because he was such a talented player, the Cincinnati Reds chose him in the second round of the 1979 Major League Baseball Draft. The draft is a special event where professional teams pick promising young players to join their organizations. Keefe Cato was the very first athlete from Fairfield University to play in a major professional sport at the highest level.
Keefe Cato made it to the big leagues, playing as a relief pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds. A relief pitcher usually comes into the game after the starting pitcher. Their job is to help the team by getting important outs or finishing the game. Keefe played for the Reds in 1983 and 1984. During his time in Major League Baseball, he had a record of 1 win and 1 loss, and he recorded 15 strikeouts.
