Keith Damon Appling was born on February 13, 1992. He is an American former basketball player. After finishing college, Appling played for the Orlando Magic for a short time. He also played college basketball for Michigan State University.

Early Life and High School Basketball

Keith Appling grew up in Detroit, Michigan. He played high school basketball at Pershing High School. In 2009, when he was a junior, Keith led his team to win the Michigan High School Athletic Association Class A Basketball Championship. This was a big achievement for his team!

During the championship game, Keith scored an amazing 49 points. This set a new record for the MHSAA Championship Game. The old record was 47 points, set way back in 1983. The next year, as a senior, Keith won the Mr. Basketball of Michigan award. This award goes to the best high school basketball player in Michigan.

By the end of his high school career, Keith was considered a top player. Many colleges wanted him to play for their teams. In his senior year, he averaged 28 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. He was also chosen to play in the 2010 McDonald's All-American Boys Game, where he scored 10 points.

College Basketball Career

Keith Appling played college basketball for Michigan State University (MSU).

  • Freshman Year: As a first-year player, he averaged 6.4 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. He was also good at shooting from long range, making over 41% of his three-point shots.
  • Sophomore Year: In his second year, Keith improved, averaging 11.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. He helped the Spartans win the Big Ten regular-season and tournament championships. He also earned third-team honors for the All-Big Ten team.
  • Junior Year: Keith started every game in his third year. He led the Spartans in scoring with 13.4 points per game and assists with 3.3 per game. He was recognized again, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors.
  • Senior Year: In his final year at MSU, he averaged 11.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game.

Professional Basketball Journey

After college, Keith Appling was not chosen in the 2014 NBA draft. However, he still got a chance to play professionally.

  • Starting Out: He joined the Portland Trail Blazers for the 2014 NBA Summer League. Later, he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers but was waived before the season started. He then played for the Los Angeles D-Fenders, a team in the NBA's development league (D-League).
  • Moving Teams: In March 2015, he was traded to the Erie BayHawks. During the 2014–15 D-League season, he averaged 10.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game.
  • NBA Opportunity: In July 2015, Appling played for the Orlando Magic in the 2015 NBA Summer League. He later signed with the Magic. On January 18, 2016, he signed a 10-day contract with the Magic and made his NBA debut that night. He played in five NBA games for the Magic.
  • D-League Success: While playing in the D-League, Keith was named to the East All-Star team for the 2016 NBA D-League All-Star Game. At the end of that season, he also earned NBA D-League All-Defensive Team honors, showing he was a strong defender.
  • Later Career: After some time away from the game, Appling returned to basketball in 2018. He played for Cañeros del Este in the Dominican Republic and then for the Abejas de León in Mexico. In March 2019, he signed with Pallacanestro Piacentina in Italy.

Personal Life

Keith Appling is the son of Tottie Williams. He studied sociology while in college.
