Kelsey is a small place in El Dorado County, California. It's called an "unincorporated community." This means it's a town that isn't officially part of a city. Kelsey is located about 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Chili Bar. It sits high up, at 1,923 feet (586 meters) above sea level.

Kelsey's Gold Rush History
Kelsey was once known as Kelsey's Diggings. It became an important spot during the California gold rush. The very first homes here were built in 1849. This was a time when many people rushed to California hoping to find gold.
How Kelsey Got Its Name
The community is named after Benjamin Kelsey. He was one of the first people to arrive in California in 1841. In 1848, Benjamin Kelsey discovered gold right at this location. This discovery helped start the town.
Life in Early Kelsey
During the exciting gold rush days, Kelsey was a very busy place. It had many businesses to serve the gold miners and settlers. At one point, Kelsey had 24 saloons, which were like restaurants and bars. There were also 12 stores where people could buy supplies. For places to stay, there were six hotels. The town even had two barber shops and a simple court of justice.
Kelsey's Post Office and School
A post office was set up in Kelsey in 1856. It helped people send and receive letters and packages. The post office moved a few times over the years. It operated until 1872, then from 1875 to 1903, and again starting in 1920.
Kelsey also had a school for its children. The first schoolhouse was built in 1858. It was rebuilt in 1903 to be better and stronger. This school served the community for a long time, finally closing in 1984.

Today, students in the Kelsey area are served by the Black Oak Mine Unified School District. This district helps provide education for young people in the community.

Kelsey has a type of weather known as a "Mediterranean Climate." This means it usually has hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. This climate is common in many parts of California.
