Kelvin Butler was born on August 8, 1956, in a town called Magnolia, Mississippi. He went to Meadows Draughon Business College in New Orleans and earned a special certificate called an associate's degree in 1975. This type of degree usually takes about two years to get.
In 1999, Kelvin Butler tried to become a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, which is another part of the state's law-making group, but he didn't win that election. However, he later served in the Mississippi Senate for District 38 from 2004 to 2016.
He got his old seat back in 2021 during a special election. A special election happens when someone leaves their job early, and a new election is held to pick a replacement. Before he was a State Senator, he also worked as an alderman for the City of Magnolia. An alderman is a local leader who helps run a city or town.
Kelvin Butler was first elected as a member of the Democratic Party. But in 2023, when he ran for re-election, he decided to run as an Independent. This means he didn't belong to a specific political party anymore. He did not win that election.
