About the Church Building
This special church was designed by an architect named J. J. Stevenson. It was built between 1898 and 1902. The church is made from red sandstone, which is a common building material in Glasgow.
Architectural Style and Features
The church's design is in the Gothic Revival style. This means it looks like older Gothic churches from the Middle Ages. A unique feature of the church is its "crown tower." This type of tower looks like a crown and can also be seen on buildings like the Chapel of King's College, Aberdeen and St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. The church is located right next to the River Kelvin on Belmont Street.
Early History of the Church
When it was first built, the church was known as the Nathanial Stevenson Memorial Free Church. It was part of the Free Church of Scotland. Later, in 1900, it joined with other churches to become part of the United Free Church of Scotland. In 1929, this group then joined with the main Church of Scotland.
Church History and Unions
The Kelvinbridge Parish Church congregation today is a result of several churches coming together over the years. These included the former East Park Church, Kelvinside Old Church, and Wilton Church. In 2014, Kelvin Stevenson Church joined with Lansdowne Parish Church. This union created the new Kelvinbridge Parish Church we know today.
Church Leadership
The current minister of Kelvinbridge Parish Church is the Reverend Gordon Kirkwood. He has been serving the church since 2003.
