The Kelvin Stevenson Memorial Church, also known as Kelvinbridge Parish Church, was a special church building in Glasgow, Scotland. It was part of the Church of Scotland. The church served the North Kelvinside area for many years. It officially closed its doors in November 2024.
About the Church Building
This church building is very unique. It was designed by an architect named J. J. Stevenson. Construction started in 1898 and finished in 1902. The church is made from red sandstone. This type of stone is common in many buildings across Glasgow.
The church was first built for the Free Church of Scotland. It was called the Nathanial Stevenson Memorial Free Church. Later, it joined the United Free Church of Scotland in 1900. Then, in 1929, it became part of the Church of Scotland.
One of the most interesting parts of the church is its "crown tower." This type of tower looks like a crown. You can see similar towers on the Chapel of King's College, Aberdeen and St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. The church building is located right next to the River Kelvin. It stands on Belmont Street, near Belmont Bridge.
A Look at Its History
The congregation that met at Kelvinbridge Parish Church was formed by combining several other churches. These included East Park Church, Kelvinside Old Church, and Wilton Church. In 2014, Kelvin Stevenson Church joined with Lansdowne Parish Church. Together, they formed the new Kelvinbridge Parish Church.
Who Led the Church?
The minister who led the church from 2003 was the Reverend Gordon Kirkwood. He served the congregation for many years.
