History of the Festival
Kempenfest began in 1971. It was first held at a place called Formosa Spring Breweries Park. This park was later known as Molson Park. In 1975, the festival moved to its current home. It now takes place right in downtown Barrie. This makes it easy for everyone to visit and enjoy.
Fun Activities to Enjoy
There are so many things to do at Kempenfest! One special event is a 2000-meter swim. People swim across Kempenfelt Bay, starting from Centennial Beach. Since 2014, the city has offered free shuttle buses. These buses help people get around the bay easily. This means you can explore all parts of the festival.
Who Organizes Kempenfest?
Kempenfest is put together by a team of people. This team represents eight different groups. Each group helps make the event happen. For example, the Barrie Art Club and the Barrie Kiwanis Club work together. They choose the best artists and craftspeople for the show. The Optimist Club takes care of the Antiques section.
The Chamber of Commerce sets up a beer garden. They also have an entertainment stage in Centennial Park. The Barrie Rotary Club runs the main beer gardens and the main stage. The YMCA creates a special Children's Village. This area has lots of fun activities for kids all weekend. Other groups like the Lions Club and Knights of Columbus also run food and drink stands. These groups raise over $250,000 each year. This money helps them do good work in the community.
Live Music and Shows
Kempenfest has two stages for entertainment. The Main Stage is located at the Rotary Beer Garden. It features both daytime and evening shows. You might need a ticket for some of the evening shows. Many famous musicians have performed here. Past entertainers include The Stampeders, Lighthouse, and April Wine. Other popular artists like Johnny Reid and George Canyon have also played. It's a great chance to see live music!
