Kenneth Arthur Middleditch (born 5 October 1925 – died 9 January 2021) was a famous British motorcycle speedway rider. Speedway is an exciting sport where riders race motorcycles with no brakes around an oval dirt track. Ken was known for his speed and skill on the track.

Ken Middleditch's Speedway Journey

Ken Middleditch had an amazing career in speedway. He started racing after serving in the RAF. He was a rear gunner during World War II. While stationed in Egypt, he became very interested in speedway racing.

Starting His Racing Career

In 1948, Ken joined the Hastings Saxons team. This team was in the Third Division of the National League. He learned to ride at the Eastbourne training school. By 1949, Ken was the top scorer for the Hastings team.

Sadly, the Hastings team closed down at the end of 1949. Ken then signed with the Poole Pirates. This move would change his career forever.

Becoming a Star at Poole

Ken had a very successful time with the Poole Pirates. He often raced with another great rider, Tony Lewis. Together, they were a strong team. Ken eventually became the captain of the Poole Pirates.

He helped the club win four league titles. This shows how important he was to the team's success. In 1957, Poole closed for a year. During this time, Ken rode for the Swindon Robins. He later returned to Poole for two more periods before he stopped racing in 1962.

Life After Racing

After retiring from speedway, Ken Middleditch started his own business. It was called Middleditch Salvage. This business was located in Sturminster Marshall, Dorset.

Ken's son, Neil, also became a successful speedway rider. Neil has been the team manager for the Poole Pirates since 1998. Ken Middleditch passed away in January 2021. He was 95 years old.
