Ken "Monster" Montour was born on September 9, 1979, in Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation, Canada. He is a former professional box lacrosse player. Ken played as a goalie in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) for eight seasons. He spent most of his career with the Buffalo Bandits. Ken Montour is a true legend in lacrosse. He is a member of the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He also won the NLL Championship and the Mann Cup.

Ken Montour's Lacrosse Journey

Starting Young in Six Nations

Ken Montour started playing lacrosse when he was a young boy. He played minor box lacrosse in his hometown of Six Nations. He was very good at it from the start. Ken won several awards during his early playing days. One award was the Larry Ruse Award for being a top goalie. He also won a Gold medal in field lacrosse at the Indigenous Games in 1995.

Playing for the Arrows and Chiefs

As a member of the Six Nations Arrows, Ken was named the Most Valuable Player in 1999. This was for the Ontario Junior A Lacrosse League. After playing for the Arrows, he joined the Six Nations Chiefs. He played for the Chiefs for most of his summer lacrosse career. In 2001 and 2002, he played for the Coquitlam Adanacs. He helped them win their first ever Mann Cup in 2001.

University Lacrosse Success

Ken Montour also played university field lacrosse. He was part of the Brock University team. They won the Ontario championship four times! Ken was named an Ontario University Athletics All-Star. He was also the MVP of the 2003 championship game.

Joining the NLL

Ken Montour was chosen by the Albany Attack in the 1999 NLL draft. He was the 26th player picked overall. He made his professional debut in the 2001 season. He played in six games that year. He had a good start, winning one game and not losing any.

Becoming an All-Star Goalie

Ken became a star goalie in the NLL. In the 2009 NLL season, he was chosen to start in the National Lacrosse League All-Star Game. This is a special game where the best players compete. That same year, he was named the NLL Goaltender of the Year. This award goes to the best goalie in the league.

His Final Season

Ken Montour played his last season in 2010. During a game, he got a serious head injury. He finished the game, but he has not played lacrosse since. He also had to miss time from his job as a teacher.

Hall of Fame

In 2017, Ken Montour was honored for his amazing career. He was inducted into the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame. This is a very special achievement for a lacrosse player.

Playing for His Nation

Ken Montour also played lacrosse for his country. He represented the Iroquois Nationals team. In 1996 and 1999, he played for the Iroquois Nationals Under-19 Field team. They played in Japan and Australia. The 1999 team won a bronze medal. In 2002 and 2007, he played for the Iroquois Nationals Men's Box team. They competed in the Box Lacrosse Championship. Ken helped his team finish second in both tournaments.
