Kenebri is a small place, also known as a locality, in northern New South Wales, Australia. It is a quiet area surrounded by nature.
About Kenebri
Kenebri is found in the beautiful Pilliga forest. This forest is a large area of native trees and plants. For a long time, people in Kenebri worked with timber from the forest. They harvested trees for wood.
Where is Kenebri?
Kenebri is located between two other towns: Baradine and Gwabegar. You can find it on the road that leads from Coonabarabran. The closest town that is still active today is Baradine.
Kenebri's Railway Story
A railway line, called the Gwabegar railway line, reached Kenebri in 1923. This was a big deal for the area! A train station and a side track (called a siding) were built.
Kenebri became important for making rail sleepers. These are the strong wooden beams that trains tracks rest on. The timber from the Pilliga forest was perfect for this.
However, the Gwabegar railway line north of Binnaway was closed in 2005. This meant trains no longer stopped at Kenebri. The station was about 564 kilometres (350 miles) by rail from Central railway station in Sydney.
Life in Kenebri
Kenebri used to have its own Post Office. It opened on March 1, 1929, but it closed down in 1984. There was also a public school in Kenebri at one time, but it is now closed.
According to a count of people in 2006, Kenebri and the areas around it had a population of 142 people.
