Kenefick Park is a special place in South Omaha, Nebraska. It's right next to the beautiful Lauritzen Gardens, which is Omaha's amazing botanical gardens. What makes Kenefick Park super cool are the two giant trains on display! These are two of the most powerful locomotives ever used by the Union Pacific Railroad: the EMD DDA40X #6900 and the famous Union Pacific Big Boy #4023.
What is Kenefick Park?
Kenefick Park is like a giant outdoor museum for trains. It sits at the southwest edge of the Lauritzen Gardens property. You can easily spot it from Interstate 80. The park is a welcoming sight for people driving into Nebraska. It proudly shows off the huge Union Pacific Big Boy #4023 and the Union Pacific Centennial #6900 locomotives.
Why is Kenefick Park Special?
The park is named after John Kenefick, who used to be a very important leader for the Union Pacific Railroad. He was the Chairman and CEO. The park was not always in this spot. In 2004, it was moved from another area near downtown. This move happened to make space for a large building called the CHI Health Center Omaha. Now, Kenefick Park is a fantastic place to see these historic trains up close!
