Kenichi Uemura (上村 健一, Uemura Kenichi, born April 22, 1974) is a former Japanese football player and manager. He played as a defender. He also represented the Japan national team in international matches.

Kenichi Uemura: A Football Star

Kenichi Uemura was born in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto, Japan, on April 22, 1974. He grew up loving football and became a professional player. Later, he also became a football coach.

Playing for Clubs

After finishing high school, Kenichi Uemura joined Sanfrecce Hiroshima in 1993. This team plays in the J1 League, which is Japan's top football league. He quickly became an important player for the team. His first game was on July 4, 1993, and he scored his first goal just a few weeks later. He played as a defender and was a key part of the team for 11 years.

After his long time at Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Uemura played for other teams. He joined Cerezo Osaka in 2004. Then, he moved to Tokyo Verdy from 2005 to 2006. He also had a short time at YSCC Yokohama. His last team was Roasso Kumamoto, where he played from 2007 to 2008. Kenichi Uemura retired from playing professional football after the 2008 season. He had some injuries during his career, which made it tough at times.

Playing for Japan

Kenichi Uemura also played for his country. In 1996, he was part of the Japan U-23 national team. They played in the 1996 Summer Olympics. He played in two matches and even scored a goal against Hungary. Japan won two games, including a famous victory against Brazil. This win was called the "Miracle of Miami" in Japan. Even though they won two games, Japan did not move past the first round.

In 2001, Uemura was chosen to play for the main Japan national team. His first game was a friendly match against Spain on April 25. He was also part of the Japan team that played in the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup. This was a big international tournament. Japan did very well and finished in second place. Uemura played in three games during this tournament. In total, he played four games for the Japan national team in 2001.

Becoming a Coach

After he stopped playing, Kenichi Uemura started a new career as a football coach. In 2009, he began coaching at Roasso Kumamoto, one of his former clubs. Later, in 2013, he moved to Kamatamare Sanuki, another J2 League club. He worked there as a coach.

In 2019, Kenichi Uemura became the manager of Kamatamare Sanuki. He took over the team after the previous manager left. He continued to work as a coach, helping young players develop their skills. As of 2024, he is coaching the China U-17 team.

Awards and Achievements

Kenichi Uemura helped the Japan national team achieve second place in the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup. This was a great achievement for the team.
