Roasso Kumamoto (ロアッソ熊本) is a Japanese football team. They are based in Kumamoto, which is the capital city of Kumamoto Prefecture. The club currently plays in the J2 League. This is Japan's second-highest professional football league.

What Does the Name "Roasso" Mean?

The name Roasso comes from two Italian words. These words are rosso and asso.

  • Rosso means "red".
  • Asso means "ace".

So, Roasso means "red ace".

Club History: How Roasso Kumamoto Started

Early Days (1969–2004)

The club began in 1969. It was first called the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation Kumamoto Soccer Club. In 1983, the team moved up to the Kyushu Soccer League.

In 1988, the club changed its name to NTT Kyushu Soccer Club. This happened after NTT became a private company. During this time, the club won the Kyushu Soccer League five times. They also won the All Japan Senior Football Championship once. In 2000, they changed their name again to NTT Kumamoto Football Club.

The club became NTT West Kumamoto Football Club in 2001. This was because NTT split into two companies. The club was promoted to the JFL in 2000. They finished 3rd in the JFL Promotion Tournament. In 2002, NTT stopped owning the club. A new community-focused club was formed, called Alouette Kumamoto Football Club. Alouette is a French word for skylark. The skylark is the official bird of Kumamoto Prefecture. The club finished 17th in the 2002 season. Because of this, they were moved back down to the Kyushu Soccer League.

Roasso Kumamoto: The Modern Era (2005–Today)

In 2005, the club changed its name to Rosso Kumamoto. Rosso means red in Italian. They won the Kyushu Soccer League that year. They also finished 3rd in the Regional League play-off tournament. This success helped them get promoted to the JFL.

In 2007, Rosso finished second in the JFL season. This was good enough to earn them a spot in the professional J.League. They joined the J2 League for the 2008 season.

The club changed its name one more time in 2008. They became the current Roasso Kumamoto. The old name Rosso was already a registered trademark. So, the club had to change it to avoid legal problems.

After playing in the J2 League for 11 years, Kumamoto was moved down to the J3 League in 2018.

Three years later, in 2021, Kumamoto returned to J2. They were promoted as the champions of the J3 League. They finished just one point ahead of Iwate Grulla Morioka.

In 2022, Kumamoto had a great season. They finished 4th in the 2022 J2 League with 62 points. This allowed them to play in the J1 promotion/relegation playoffs. Roasso played against Oita Trinita and Montedio Yamagata. Both matches ended in a draw (1–1 and 2–2). The rules gave the advantage to the team that finished higher in the league. This meant Roasso moved to the playoff finals without winning a match. In the final, they played Kyoto Sanga from the J1 League. Kyoto Sanga also had the seeding advantage. Roasso needed to win this match to get promoted to J1. The game ended in a 1–1 draw. So, Roasso was not promoted to the J1 League that year.

Team Rivals: The Hisatsu Derby

Roasso Kumamoto has a big rival: Kagoshima United. They are from the neighboring prefecture. These two clubs played in the same Kyushu Soccer League for many years.

Matches between them are called the Hisatsu derby. This name comes from the old names for the Kumamoto and Kagoshima areas. These games are very exciting for fans in both prefectures.
