Roasso Kumamoto (ロアッソ熊本, Roasso Kumamoto) is a Japanese football club. It is based in Kumamoto, the main city of Kumamoto Prefecture. The club plays in the J2 League. This is Japan's second-highest professional football league.

What Does the Name "Roasso" Mean?

The name Roasso comes from two Italian words. These words are rosso and asso. Rosso means "red," and asso means "ace." So, "Roasso" means "red ace."

Club History

How It All Started (1969–2004)

The club began in 1969. It was first called the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation Kumamoto Soccer Club. In 1983, the team moved up to the Kyushu Soccer League.

In 1988, the club changed its name to NTT Kyushu Soccer Club. During this time, they won the Kyushu Soccer League five times. They also won the All Japan Senior Football Championship once. In 2000, they changed their name again to NTT Kumamoto Football Club.

In 2001, the club became NTT West Kumamoto Football Club. This happened when NTT split into two companies. The club was promoted to the JFL in 2000. The JFL was a higher league. In 2002, NTT stopped owning the club. A new club, Alouette Kumamoto Football Club, was formed. Alouette is a French word for "skylark." The skylark is the official bird of Kumamoto Prefecture. That season, the club finished 17th and went back down to the Kyushu Soccer League.

Roasso Kumamoto Today (2005–)

In 2005, the club changed its name to Rosso Kumamoto. Rosso means "red" in Italian. They won the Kyushu Soccer League again. Then, they finished third in a special play-off tournament. This allowed them to be promoted to the JFL.

In 2007, Rosso finished second in the JFL season. This was good enough to earn them a spot in the J.League. They joined the J2 League for the 2008 season.

The club changed its name one more time in 2008. It became the current Roasso Kumamoto. The old name, Rosso, was already a registered trademark. So, they had to change it to avoid legal problems.

After playing in the J2 League for 11 years, Kumamoto was moved down to the J3 League in 2018.

After three years in the J3 League, Kumamoto made a comeback to J2. They won the J3 championship in 2021. They were just one point ahead of Iwate Grulla Morioka.

In 2022, Kumamoto had a great season. They finished 4th in the 2022 J2 League. This allowed them to enter the J1 promotion/relegation playoffs. Roasso played against Oita Trinita and Montedio Yamagata. Both matches ended in a draw (1–1 and 2–2). Because Roasso finished higher in the league, they moved on to the final. In the final, they played against Kyoto Sanga from the J1 League. Kyoto Sanga had the advantage, meaning Roasso needed to win to get promoted. The match ended in a 1–1 draw. So, Roasso did not get promoted to J1 that year.

Club Rivalries

Roasso Kumamoto's main rival is Kagoshima United. They are from a neighboring prefecture. These two clubs played in the Kyushu Soccer League together for many years. Matches between them are called the Hisatsu derby. This derby is very exciting for fans in both prefectures.
