Kenji Arima's Football Journey
Playing Days
Kenji Arima was born in Yokohama, Japan. After finishing university, he joined a football club called Kashiwa Reysol in 1995. This team had just moved up to the top league in Japan, the J1 League. For three seasons, Kenji often came into games as a substitute player. This means he would start on the bench and come on to play later in the match.
In 1998, he moved to another team, Consadole Sapporo. Then, in 1999, he joined a brand new club called Yokohama FC. This club was special to him because it was based in his hometown of Yokohama. At Yokohama FC, Kenji became a regular player, meaning he started most games.
His team, Yokohama FC, won the Japan Football League championship two years in a row, in 1999 and 2000. Because they won, they were promoted to the J2 League in 2001. Kenji was a star player during this time. In 2000, he was the top scorer in the league, meaning he scored the most goals. He also won the MVP award, which stands for "Most Valuable Player." He stopped playing football at the end of the 2002 season.
Becoming a Coach
After he stopped playing, Kenji Arima started a new career as a football coach. In 2003, he began coaching at FC Tokyo. For about ten years, he mainly coached the younger teams at the club, helping young players develop their skills.
In 2014, he became the manager for YSCC Yokohama, a team that had just moved up to the J3 League. A manager is like the head coach of a team; they are in charge of training, tactics, and choosing the players for games. Kenji managed YSCC Yokohama for two seasons. He then signed with J2 League club Fagiano Okayama in 2019.
