Kenji Arima (有馬 賢二, Arima Kenji, born November 26, 1972) is a former Japanese football player and manager. He was born in Yokohama, Japan. Arima played as a forward for several Japanese clubs. After he stopped playing, he became a football coach and manager.
Kenji Arima's Playing Career
Kenji Arima was born in Yokohama on November 26, 1972. After finishing university, he joined Kashiwa Reysol in 1995. This team had just moved up to the J1 League, which is Japan's top professional football league.
He mostly played as a substitute player for three seasons. In 1998, he moved to Consadole Sapporo. The next year, in 1999, he joined Yokohama FC. This was a brand new club in the Japan Football League, which is a lower division. It was also based in his hometown of Yokohama.
At Yokohama FC, Arima became a regular player. His team won the league championship two years in a row, in 1999 and 2000. Because of their success, they were promoted to the J2 League in 2001. The J2 League is the second-highest professional football league in Japan.
In 2000, Kenji Arima was the top scorer in the league. He also won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award that year. He stopped playing professional football at the end of the 2002 season.
Kenji Arima's Coaching Career
After he retired as a player, Arima started his coaching journey. In 2003, he began coaching at FC Tokyo. For about ten years, he mainly coached the youth teams there.
In 2014, he moved to YSCC Yokohama. This club had just been promoted to the J3 League, which is another professional league in Japan. Arima became their manager. He managed the team for two seasons. However, the club finished at the very bottom of the league both years. Because of this, he resigned at the end of the 2015 season.
In 2019, Kenji Arima signed with Fagiano Okayama. This team plays in the J2 League.
