This team played in the Japan Soccer League, which was the top football league in Japan at that time. Even though he was part of the team for five years, from 1986 to 1991, he did not get to play in any official games.

In 1993, his team, Kashima Antlers, finished in second place in the J1 League. They also reached the final of the Emperor's Cup that same year, showing they were one of the best teams.

Time with Kashiwa Reysol and Kawasaki Frontale

After his time with Kashima Antlers, Kenji Oba moved to Kashiwa Reysol in 1995. This team had just been promoted to the J1 League. He played in many games during 1995. However, in 1996, he played less often. In 1997, he joined Kawasaki Frontale, a team in the Japan Football League. He played for them for two seasons. In 1998, he had fewer chances to play and decided to retire from professional football at the end of that season.
