Kenneth Strath Moore (born February 17, 1910 – died December 8, 1981) was a Canadian ice hockey player. He made history by becoming the first Indigenous person to win an Olympic gold medal. He achieved this amazing feat at the 1932 Winter Olympics.
Early Life and Heritage
Kenneth Moore was born in Balcarres, Saskatchewan. He was a proud member of the Peepeekisis Cree Nation in Saskatchewan. His family originally came from the Norway House Cree Nation in Northern Manitoba. Kenneth was one of the very first Indigenous athletes from Canada to compete in the Olympic Games.
Olympic Hockey Career
In 1932, Kenneth Moore was part of the Winnipeg Hockey Club. This team represented Canada at the Winter Olympics that year. They played incredibly well and won the gold medal! During the tournament, Kenneth played in one game and even scored a goal.
Later Life
Kenneth Moore married Edith Mae McDougall. They had one daughter, and he later became a grandfather to two granddaughters and a great-grandfather to one great-grandson. Kenneth Moore passed away in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
