Kenneth Walters (1934 – 28 March 2022) was a British mathematician and rheologist. He was a top research professor at Aberystwyth University. He studied how liquids flow and change shape.

Education and Early Life

Kenneth Walters earned his PhD degree from the University of Swansea in 1959. A PhD is a very high university degree. His research was about how certain "elastico-viscous" liquids behave. These are liquids that can stretch like elastic but also flow like a liquid.

Understanding How Liquids Flow

Professor Walters made big contributions to the field of rheology. Rheology is the study of how materials flow and change shape. Think about honey, toothpaste, or paint. They don't flow like water. These are called non-Newtonian fluids.

He studied these special liquids, especially ones that are "elastic." This means they can stretch or bounce back a bit, even though they are liquids.

Measuring Liquid Properties

One of his main areas of work was finding better ways to measure how liquids behave. He improved the tools used to test liquids. He also helped industries make better products. These included lubricants (like oil for engines), detergents (like soap), and paints.

Solving Complex Flow Problems

He also worked on how to solve problems with liquids flowing in tricky ways. This involved using computer models to understand complex flows. His books, like Rheometry, are important guides for scientists. Another book, Numerical Simulation of Non-Newtonian Flow, is also very influential.

Awards and Recognition

Professor Walters received many awards for his work in rheology.

  • In 1984, he won the Gold Medal from the British Society of Rheology.
  • In 2002, he received the Weissenberg Award from the European Society of Rheology.
  • In 1991, he was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). This is a very high honor for scientists in the UK.
  • In 1995, he became a Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Engineering.

He was also a leader in the rheology community.

  • He was President of the British Society of Rheology from 1974 to 1976.
  • He led the European Society of Rheology from 1996 to 2000.
  • He was Chairman of the International Committee on Rheology from 2000 to 2004.

Personal Life

In 1961, Kenneth met Mary Eccles, who was a student at Aberystwyth. They both shared a strong Christian faith. They got married in 1963. Their faith led them to be active leaders at St Michael's Anglican church in Aberystwyth. They had three children and seven grandchildren.

Death

Kenneth Walters passed away on March 28, 2022. His death was announced a few days later.
