Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Kenoayoak Pudlat is a former politician from Kimmirut, a community in Nunavut, Canada. He served as a representative for his region in the government.

Kenoayoak Pudlat: A Public Servant

Kenoayoak Pudlat was a politician who worked at the "territorial level." This means he was involved in the government of a large area, like a territory, rather than the whole country. He came from a place called Lake Harbour, which is now known as Kimmirut. At the time he was a politician, Kimmirut was part of the Northwest Territories. Later, in 1999, Nunavut became its own territory.

Representing Baffin South

In 1991, Kenoayoak Pudlat ran in an election for a special area called the Baffin South electoral district. An electoral district is like a specific neighborhood or region that a politician represents. People living in that district vote for who they want to speak for them in the government.

Pudlat was successful in the 1991 Northwest Territories general election. He won against the person who had been in that job for a long time, Joe Arlooktoo. When someone has been in a political job for a while, they are called an "incumbent."

His Time in the Legislature

After winning the election, Kenoayoak Pudlat became a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). The Legislative Assembly is like a big meeting place where elected politicians discuss and make laws for the territory. Pudlat served as an MLA from 1991 until 1995. He did not run for re-election or was not elected again in 1995, so his time in the Legislature ended then. Another person, Goo Arlooktoo, took over his role.
