Life Story

Kerime Nadir was born in Istanbul, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire, on February 5, 1917. Her father, Nadir Azrak, worked in finance. She went to the French St. Joseph High School in İstanbul and finished in 1935. She also took extra private lessons to learn more. When she was young, she spent her summers at her aunts' big houses in Beylerbeyi and Çamlıca.

Sadly, Kerime Nadir passed away from cancer on March 20, 1984. She was living at the Maçka Palace Hotel in Istanbul at the time.

Becoming a Writer

Kerime Nadir started her writing journey in 1937. She published her poems and short stories in magazines like Servet-i Fünun ("Wealth of Knowledge"), Uyanış ("Awakening"), and Yarım Ay ("The Half Moon"). In the same year, her first novel, Yeşil Işıklar ("Green Lights"), was published.

Later, her stories and novels, which were mostly about love and romance, appeared in popular publications such as Yedigün ("Seven Days"), Aydabir ("The Monthly"), and Hayat ("Life"). She became very well-known for her emotional love stories.

Popular Novels

Her novel Hıçkırık ("Sob"), published in 1938, became one of the most popular books of its time. Kerime Nadir became one of the best-selling fiction writers in Turkey during the Republican era. When she died, 40 of her 67 novels had been printed over 200 times. More than five million copies of her books were sold!

One of her novels, Posta Güvercini ("The Carrier Pigeon"), was even translated into French. About 30 of her novels were turned into movies and TV shows.

Characters in Her Books

In her novels, Kerime Nadir often wrote about characters dealing with feelings and relationships. Her female characters sometimes struggled with love or felt easily tricked by men. The men in her stories were often shown as friendly, romantic, and emotional.

What People Thought of Her Work

Some people criticized Kerime Nadir for writing mostly about rich characters and not focusing on social problems. However, other critics believed she did something very important: she helped more people in Turkey get into the habit of reading books. This was a big help for reading culture in the country.
