Kevin Aylward's Journey in Politics
Starting in Politics
Kevin Aylward was born in Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland and Labrador. He was only 24 years old when he was first elected. This happened in the 1985 provincial election. He became a Member of the House of Assembly (MHA).
During the 1990s and early 2000s, he held many important jobs in the government. These jobs are called cabinet portfolios. He was in charge of departments like Environment and Labour, Forest Resources and Agrifoods, and Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
Mr. Aylward decided not to run for re-election in the 2003 provincial election.
Helping the Environment
Kevin Aylward was the Minister of the Environment more than once. He first took on this role in 1994. Later, in 1996, he became the Minister of Environment and Labour. This meant he helped make rules to protect nature and also looked after workers' rights.
After working in other government jobs, he became the Environment Minister again in 2002.
Leading the Party
On August 12, 2011, Kevin Aylward announced he wanted to be the leader of the Liberal Party. Just two days later, on August 14, the party leaders chose him. They picked him because he had a lot of experience. He had been an MHA and a cabinet minister before.
In the October 2011 election, the Liberal Party did not win many seats. Kevin Aylward himself did not win his local election in St. George's-Stephenville East. Because of this, he announced he was stepping down as leader on October 26, 2011.
Trying Again
In 2021, Kevin Aylward tried to get back into politics. He ran as a Liberal candidate in the Stephenville-Port au Port area. However, he was not successful in that election.
