Kevin Aylward's Political Journey
Kevin Aylward was born in 1960 in Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland and Labrador. He was 24 years old when he was first elected. This happened in the 1985 provincial election. He became a Member of the House of Assembly (MHA).
During the 1990s and early 2000s, he held several important jobs in the government. These jobs are called "cabinet portfolios." He was in charge of areas like Environment and Labour. He also oversaw Forest Resources and Agrifoods. Another role was Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
Aylward decided not to run for re-election in the 2003 provincial election.
Serving as Environment Minister
Kevin Aylward held the job of Environment Minister more than once. He was first sworn into the cabinet in 1994. This was under Premier Clyde Wells. In 1996, Premier Brian Tobin appointed him Minister of Environment and Labour.
After holding other cabinet jobs from 1997 to 2002, he became Environment Minister again. This was under Premier Roger Grimes.
Becoming Party Leader
On August 12, 2011, Aylward announced he wanted to lead the Liberal Party. Two days later, on August 14, the party's leaders chose him. They picked him over six other people. They said his past experience as an MHA and cabinet minister was a key reason.
In the October 2011 election, the Progressive Conservatives won. They formed the government for the third time in a row. The Liberals remained the Official Opposition. However, they only received 19.1 percent of the votes. On October 26, 2011, Aylward announced he was stepping down as leader. This decision came after he lost his own election in the district of St. George's-Stephenville East.
Later Election Attempt
