About Kevin O'Toole
Kevin O'Toole has a background that is both Métis and Irish. He grew up in the cities of New Westminster and North Vancouver, British Columbia. He is well-known in the bodybuilding world as a Métis athlete.
Early Life and Inspiration
As a kid, Kevin played hockey up to the Midget 'A' level. He became very interested in weight training. After watching the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Pumping Iron, he felt inspired to try bodybuilding. People noticed he had a natural talent for the sport.
Kevin competed in two main weight groups during his career:
- Middleweight: This was for athletes weighing between 154.25 lbs and 176.25 lbs.
- Light-heavyweight: This was for athletes weighing between 176.25 lbs and 198.25 lbs.
He won three championships while competing as a light-heavyweight.
First Competitions
Kevin started competing a bit later than some, entering his first show, the Gator's Classic, in 1992. He won the middleweight class and even tied for the overall champion title. This was impressive because he reportedly arrived so late he didn't even have time to put on his bronzer!
The next year, he earned certificates to teach fitness and weight training. In 1994, he competed at the British Columbia Bodybuilding Championships. There was a mistake in the scoring, which at first gave the light-heavyweight win to someone else. The decision was later changed, and Kevin was recognized as the class winner.
Major Wins
In 1995, Kevin entered the last-ever Western Canada Bodybuilding Championships. He won both the Light Heavyweight title and the Overall competition.
The following year, in 1996, he placed second in the light-heavyweight division at the Canadian Bodybuilding Championships. Just two weeks later, he competed in the North American Championships. He easily won the light-heavyweight title there. This made him only the second person ever to win both the overall Western Canada championship and a weight class at the North American championship.
After Bodybuilding
Kevin O'Toole stopped competing in bodybuilding after the 1996 North American championships. He then started a new career as a personal trainer. He is still known in the bodybuilding world for his balanced and pleasing physique.
Today, Kevin owns and runs KO Fitness in his hometown of North Vancouver. He continues to work as a personal trainer there. In 1998, he also began training in mixed martial arts. He even placed first in his Submission Wrestling Bracket at the 1999 'Fireball Challenge'.
