Who Was Jalaf ibn Rashid?
Jalaf ibn Rashid was a trusted assistant, or lieutenant, to a rebel leader named Bahlul Ibn Marzuq. Bahlul was a powerful figure in the Zaragoza region of al-Andalus, which was the name for the parts of Spain ruled by Muslims at that time.
The Capture of Huesca
In the year 800, Bahlul Ibn Marzuq and his forces, including Jalaf, managed to capture the city of Huesca. This was a big victory for them.
A Change in Leadership
After some time, Bahlul Ibn Marzuq faced defeat. Troops sent by the Spanish Wāli (a governor or ruler) pushed Bahlul out of Huesca. Bahlul then fled to a place called Pallars.
Jalaf's Decision
It was during this time that Jalaf ibn Rashid made a very important and surprising decision. He killed his former leader, Bahlul Ibn Marzuq. Because of this action, the government of Huesca and the nearby region of Barbitanya (which included the city of Barbastro) rewarded Jalaf.
Jalaf's Rule in Huesca
After Bahlul's death, Jalaf ibn Rashid took control of Huesca. He ruled the city for a long time, about sixty years, from 802 to 862. This was a significant period of stability under his leadership.
Huesca Changes Hands
Eventually, Huesca was no longer under Jalaf's direct control. It was passed to another powerful family known as the Banu Qasi. Later, it went to Musa ibn Galindo, who was connected to the Kings of Pamplona.
The Banu Jalaf Family
Even after Jalaf lost control of Huesca, his family, known as the Banu Jalaf, continued to rule in the Barbitanya region for another twenty years. This shows that Jalaf's family remained important in the area for some time.
