Kieren Fallon's Racing Journey
Starting with Henry Cecil
In 1997, Kieren Fallon became the main jockey for Henry Cecil. Cecil was one of Britain's top horse trainers. Kieren won his first big race, called a Classic, in May 1997. He rode a horse named Sleepytime to victory in the 1000 Guineas.
Henry Cecil said Kieren was a "very hard worker" and a "Group One Jockey." Kieren was known for his amazing riding skills. He won the Champion Jockey title that year with 202 wins.
Kieren kept his Champion Jockey title for the next two years. He won over 200 races each year. In 1999, he won his first Derby race. He rode a horse named Oath to win at Epsom. He also won the Oaks race on Ramruma. Both horses were trained by Henry Cecil. Soon after, Kieren left Cecil's stable.
Riding for Michael Stoute
After leaving Cecil, Kieren rode for many different trainers. Then, he became the main jockey for Michael Stoute's powerful stable. With Stoute, Kieren won many important races. This included winning the 2000 Guineas twice in a row. He won with King's Best and then with Golan.
In 2000, Kieren had a bad fall at Royal Ascot. He hurt his arm and couldn't ride for several months. Because of this, he lost his Champion Jockey title that year.
Kieren stopped being the main jockey for Stoute in November 2001. Some of Stoute's horse owners wanted other jockeys. Even without a formal job, Kieren kept winning big races for Stoute. He won the Derby with Kris Kin in 2003 and North Light in 2004.
Challenges and Comebacks
In 2004, Kieren faced some difficulties. He was unable to ride in the UK for a period due to investigations. However, he was still able to race in Ireland.
In December 2007, a judge found Kieren and others not guilty due to a lack of evidence. His ban from racing in Britain was lifted right away.
Joining Aidan O'Brien's Team
In February 2005, Kieren became the main jockey for Aidan O'Brien's famous Ballydoyle stable. He started strong, winning the 2000 Guineas with Footstepsinthesand. He had more important wins that year with horses like Yeats and George Washington.
In 2006, Kieren faced another racing ban in England. This limited his chances to race there. But he still won big races for O'Brien's team. A notable win was with Dylan Thomas in 2007. Dylan Thomas was named the best horse in Europe that year. Kieren's time with O'Brien ended in January 2008. He received an 18-month worldwide ban from French racing authorities.
Kieren returned to racing on September 4, 2009, at Lingfield Park.
Riding as a Freelance Jockey
From 2010, Kieren Fallon mostly rode for trainers like Luca Cumani and Mark Johnston. He didn't win as many major races, but he still had success. He rode 140 winners in 2010 and 154 in 2011. In 2011, he finished third in the Jockeys' championship.
In 2014, Kieren won the 2000 Guineas again. He rode Night of Thunder to victory in the final moments of the race. This was his first Classic win in eight years.
Kieren Fallon's Life Outside Racing
Kieren Fallon has three children with his ex-wife Julie: Natalie Ann (born 1994), and twins Brittany Michelle and Cieren Richard (born 1999). His son, Cieren Fallon, is also a jockey. Cieren won his first race in 2018. He became the British Champion Apprentice in 2019. In July 2020, Cieren won his first Group 1 race, the July Cup, riding Oxted.
Kieren used to write a column for the Racing Post Weekender newspaper.
In July 2016, Kieren Fallon announced that he had been diagnosed with depression. He decided to retire from racing. In 2017, he released his autobiography called Form. It was published by Simon & Schuster.
