The Killicut-Way House is a very old and special home located in Nashua, New Hampshire. It was likely built around 1740, making it one of the oldest buildings in the city! This house is important because it still looks much like it did hundreds of years ago. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 because of its historical value.

The Killicut-Way House: A Glimpse into the Past

The Killicut-Way House is found in a quiet neighborhood in southern Nashua. It's a 1-1/2 story house, which means it has one full floor and a smaller half-floor upstairs. The house is built with a strong wooden frame and has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a gabled roof. It also has a large chimney in the center.

Exploring the House's Design

The outside of the house is covered with wooden shingles. These shingles protect what seems to be the original outer walls, made of wide wooden planks. The main door is in the middle of the front of the house. It's an old-style door made of vertical wooden boards, held together with iron hinges. Above the door, there's a small window with four glass panes. The other windows on the house are sash windows, which means they slide up and down. They are placed close to the roof on the front and back.

Inside, the house has a classic layout for homes with a central chimney. There's a small entryway, with living rooms on either side of the chimney. Behind the chimney, there's a long kitchen area. Some of the rooms still have their original wide floorboards. The living room on the southwest side even has its original carved wooden panels, which are very special!

Who Lived Here? A Look at Its History

We don't know the exact year the Killicut-Way House was built. For a long time, people thought it was built in the late 1600s or around 1700. However, the way it was built suggests it's a bit newer. If Thomas Killicut built it, it must have been after the 1740s. He was the first person from the Killicut family to live here.

Thomas Killicut was a brave soldier. He fought in the French and Indian War as part of Rogers' Rangers, a famous group of soldiers. He also fought in the American Revolutionary War. The house stayed in the Killicut family for many years, even into the 1900s. This house is one of only two homes from the 1700s still standing in Nashua today.
