Discover Kilmore, Indiana

Kilmore is a quiet community in the state of Indiana, in the United States. It's a place with a bit of history, especially when it comes to how it got its name. Learning about small towns like Kilmore helps us understand how different places in America grew over time.

How Kilmore Got Its Name

This community was first started in 1854 by a person named Abner C. Pence. Because of him, the area was known as Penceville for about twenty years. Imagine living in a town named after its founder!

Things changed when the Vandalia Railroad came through in 1870. Railroads were super important back then for moving people and goods. The railroad company decided to change the town's name to Kilmore. They named it after a nearby creek, which itself was named after an early settler, John Killmore. So, the town's name honors both the creek and an important person from its past.

The Old Post Office

Like many communities, Kilmore once had its own post office. It was opened in 1872. Back then, a post office was a really big deal. It was the main way people sent letters, received news, and stayed connected with family and friends far away. Before phones and the internet, the mail was how you communicated!

However, the post office in Kilmore didn't stay open forever. It was closed down in 1903. This often happened as transportation improved and smaller post offices were no longer needed as much.
