An open Kilner jar

A Kilner jar is a special jar used to keep food fresh. It has a rubber ring that seals the lid tightly. This seal stops air from getting in or out, which helps food stay good for a long time.

The Kilner family and their company, John Kilner & Co, first invented and made these jars in Yorkshire, England. Today, most Kilner jars have metal tops instead of rubber ones. They are also sometimes called Terrine Jars.

The Story of Kilner Jars

Early Days and Challenges

The Kilner company started making glass bottles in 1842. They were known for their strong, useful jars. However, in 1871, the company faced a problem. Smoke from their factory chimneys in Thornhill Lees caused pollution. A judge ordered them to stop the pollution, saying that "no man has the right to interfere with the supply of pure air."

This ruling meant the company had to change how it worked. They had to switch from burning coal to using gas furnaces. This was a big and expensive change. The company struggled for many years after this.

New Owners and Modern Jars

In 1937, the Kilner company went out of business. During a sale, the special design and rights to make the "Kilner Jar" were sold. Another company, United Glass Bottle, bought these rights. They also bought the rights to the very similar Mason jar, which Kilner had also made.

Today, a company called the Rayware Group owns the design and trademark for the original Kilner jar. They continue to make these popular jars. Most new Kilner jars are now made in China.
