C. Kim Bracey is an American politician. She served as the 24th Mayor of York, Pennsylvania. Her term was from January 4, 2010, to January 2, 2018. Kim Bracey made history as the first African American mayor of York. She was also the second woman to hold this important office. The first woman mayor was Betty Marshall, who served from 1978 to 1982.
Kim Bracey's Story
Her Early Life
Kim Bracey was born in York, Pennsylvania. She attended William Penn Senior High School. After high school, she went to Bloomsburg University. In 1984, she joined the United States Air Force.
Bracey served in the Air Force for ten years. She was honorably discharged in 1994. She reached the rank of technical sergeant (E-6). After leaving the Air Force, she returned to York. She then started working at the Crispus Attucks Association.
Starting in Politics
In 2003, York Mayor John Brenner chose Kim Bracey for a new role. She became the Director of the Department of Community Development. This department helps with the city's economic development. She worked in this position from June 2003 to January 2009.
In 2008, Mayor John Brenner announced he would not run again. He supported Kim Bracey to become the next mayor. In January 2009, Bracey left her director job. This allowed her to focus on her campaign to become mayor.
Becoming Mayor
Kim Bracey ran in the primary election on May 19, 2009. She won against three other Democratic candidates. Then, she won the general election on November 3, 2009. She beat her Republican opponent, Wendell Banks. Bracey received 81% of the votes.
Kim Bracey was sworn in as York's 24th mayor on January 4, 2010. She was re-elected for a second term in 2013. However, she lost her re-election bid in 2017. Michael Helfrich became the next mayor. He took office on January 2, 2018.
