A Star from a Young Age
Kim Fields started her acting career very early. Before her big break, she appeared in a TV commercial for Mrs. Butterworth's syrup. She also had a small role on the TV show Good Times, where she acted alongside a young Janet Jackson.
The Facts of Life
In 1979, Fields landed the role that would make her a star: Dorothy "Tootie" Ramsey in The Facts of Life. The show was a "spin-off," meaning it was created from another show called Diff'rent Strokes, where her character first appeared.
Fields was very short when the show started. To make her appear taller on camera, the producers had her wear roller skates during the first season. Her character was known for the catchphrase, "We're in troouu-ble!" which fans still remember today.
During her time on the show, Fields also explored music. In 1984, she released two songs, "He Loves Me He Loves Me Not" and "Dear Michael."
Career as an Adult
After The Facts of Life ended in 1988, Fields took a break from acting to go to college. She earned a degree from Pepperdine University.
Living Single
In 1993, Fields returned to television in a big way. She starred as Regine Hunter in the popular Fox sitcom Living Single. The show was about a group of friends living in New York City. Her real-life mother, Chip Fields, even played her character's mom on the show. Living Single was a huge success and ran for five years.
Becoming a Director
After Living Single, Fields decided to work behind the camera. Using the skills she learned in college, she began directing television shows. She directed many episodes of the Nickelodeon show Kenan & Kel, and even appeared in a couple of them. She also directed episodes of other popular shows, like Tyler Perry's House of Payne and Let's Stay Together.
Recent Work and Reality TV
Fields has continued to act in movies and guest-star on TV shows. In 2015, she joined the cast of the reality TV show The Real Housewives of Atlanta for one season.
In 2016, she competed on the popular show Dancing with the Stars. She was paired with professional dancer Sasha Farber, and they finished in 8th place.
Since 2021, Fields has starred as Regina Upshaw in the Netflix comedy series The Upshaws.
