Kim Longinotto (born Sally Anne Longinotto-Landseer on February 8, 1948, in London) is a British filmmaker. She is famous for making documentaries that show the lives of women and girls who face difficult situations or unfair treatment.

Kim Longinotto has made more than 20 films. Her movies often feature inspiring women and girls. For example, she has made films about women in Kenya, women standing up for themselves in India, and the story of Salma, an Indian Muslim woman who shared her poetry with the world even though her family kept her isolated for many years.

Early Life and Education

Kimona Sally-Anne Longinotto-Landseer was born on February 8, 1948. Her father was a photographer. When she was 10, she went to a very strict boarding school for girls. It was hard for her to make friends there because a teacher once told everyone not to talk to her for a whole school term.

Later, she found out that "Landseer" was not her real family name. So, she decided to use only "Longinotto." She went to Essex University to study English literature and writing. After that, she joined her friend and future filmmaker Nick Broomfield at the National Film and Television School. While studying, she made a documentary called Pride of Place about her boarding school. This film was shown at the London Film Festival.

Filmmaking Career

Kim Longinotto is known as an observational filmmaker. This means she makes documentaries by simply watching and recording real life as it happens. She usually avoids planning scenes, writing scripts, or doing interviews. Her goal is to show events naturally, without interfering.

She also runs her own film company called Vixen Films. She started this company in 1988 with Claire Hunt.
