Kim Shattuck's Early Life and Music Career
Growing Up and Starting Music
Kimberly Dianne Shattuck was born on July 17, 1963. Her parents were Kent and Betty Shattuck. She grew up in Orange County with her brother Kirk and sister Kristen.
Kim started playing guitar while she was studying photography at Orange Coast College. This is where her musical journey began.
Her Journey in Music
Kim Shattuck played bass guitar and sang backup vocals for The Pandoras from 1985 to 1990. In 1991, she decided to switch to lead guitar and become the main singer. She then formed the Muffs in Los Angeles with Melanie Vammen, who was also from The Pandoras.
The Muffs were very active for over two decades. They released seven albums between 1993 and 2019.
Besides her work with The Pandoras and The Muffs, Kim Shattuck was involved in many other music projects. In the early 1990s, she sang on several recordings for the band White Flag. She also sometimes performed live with them.
Kim sang on the NOFX song "Lori Meyers" from their album Punk in Drublic. She also sang on a Bowling for Soup song called "I'll Always Remember You (That Way)." This song was part of the single "My Wena."
She also worked with Kepi Ghoulie on the song "This Friend of Mine." This song was on the album American Gothic. Kim also collaborated with The Dollyrots on their track "Some Girls" from the album A Little Messed Up.
Kim Shattuck even inspired a character named Dr. Shattuck on the TV show Mr. Show. In 2013, she joined the Pixies for their European tour. She filled in after their original bass player, Kim Deal, left the band. However, Kim Shattuck was let go from the Pixies at the end of that tour.
Shortly before she passed away, Kim recorded six songs with Melanie Vammen and Palmyra Delran. They formed a group called The Coolies. Stevie Van Zandt even made a special appearance on one of their songs.
Kim Shattuck also took part in several reunions of The Pandoras from 2014 to 2018. Even though she originally played bass and sang backup for them, she became the lead singer and guitarist for these reunion shows. This was because the original lead singer of The Pandoras, Paula Pierce, had passed away in 1991.
Kim Shattuck's Later Life and Passing
Kim Shattuck passed away at her home in Los Angeles on October 2, 2019. She was 56 years old. She died from problems related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS.
Kim had never told the public that she had this illness. However, she did mention that it ran in her father's family. Kim was survived by her mother, her two siblings, and her husband of 16 years, Kevin Sutherland.
Just before she died, The Muffs had finished recording their seventh studio album, No Holiday. This album was released on October 18, 2019, shortly after her passing.
