King's Men (playing company) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The King's Men was a famous group of actors in England. The well-known writer William Shakespeare was a member of this company for most of his career.

Before 1603, during the time of Queen Elizabeth I, the group was known as "The Lord Chamberlain's Men". They changed their name to "The King's Men" in 1603. This happened when King James I became king and decided to support them. Having a king or an important noble as a supporter, called a patron, was very important for acting groups back then.

Why did acting groups need a patron?

All acting groups needed a special licence to perform plays. This licence was usually given and owned by a powerful nobleman. This meant the acting company had protection and official permission to put on shows.

Other famous acting groups

"The Admiral's Men" was another popular acting company during that time. They were supported by Lord Howard, who was the Lord High Admiral of England.
