What it Looks Like
The stems of this plant are covered with leaves. Each leaf is oval-shaped. They are usually several centimeters long. They are about half as wide as they are long.
The flowers are very pretty. They can grow alone or in small groups. Each flower is about four to five centimeters long. When open, it is two or three centimeters wide at the top. The flowers are a deep blue to purple color. They have pointed parts called lobes. After the flower, a fruit grows. This fruit is a capsule. It holds seeds that have small wings.
Where it Lives
This plant is found along the west coast of North America. It grows from British Columbia in Canada down to northern California in the United States. You can find it in wet places. It likes hills and mountains. It often grows in meadows that get flooded. It also likes marshy areas called bogs. Sometimes, it even grows at sea level in special mossy bogs.
