History of the Chapel
Early Methodist Chapels in Derby
The first Methodist chapel in Derby was built a long time ago, in 1765. It was located on St Michael's Lane. Later, in 1805, a new chapel was built on King Street. This chapel was quite large and could hold about 800 people.
Building the New King Street Chapel
By 1840, the King Street chapel was not big enough for all the people who wanted to attend. So, plans were made to build an even larger new building. The first stone for this new chapel was placed on October 29, 1840.
The new chapel was designed by an architect named James Simpson from Leeds. It officially opened its doors on September 29, 1841. The building was known for its grand and impressive front. It had a Greek Doric porch at the bottom and Ionic pillars with arched windows on the upper floor. It also featured a triangular top section called a pediment.
The Macdonald Family Home
Next to the chapel, two houses were built for the ministers. One of these homes was where Reverend George Browne Macdonald lived with his wife, Hannah. They had eleven children. Some of their children grew up to be very famous or married famous people:
- Alice Kipling became the mother of Rudyard Kipling, a well-known writer.
- Lady Georgiana Burne-Jones married Edward Burne-Jones, a famous artist.
- Lady Agnes Poynter married Edward Poynter, who became the president of the Royal Academy of Arts.
- Louisa Baldwin was the mother of Stanley Baldwin, who later became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
When the Chapel Closed
The King Street Methodist Chapel stood for many years. However, it was eventually taken down in 1968.
The Chapel's Organ
In 1841, a large pipe organ was put into the chapel. It was made by a company called Booth. When the King Street Chapel closed, its organ was moved to another church. It found a new home at Queen's Hall Methodist Mission in Wigan.
