Kingriver, California facts for kids
Kingriver (also known as King's River or Smith's Ferry) was a small community that once existed in Fresno County, California. It's called a "former settlement" because people used to live and work there, but over time, the community faded away, and no one lives there today.
Where Was Kingriver Located?
Kingriver was located about 7 miles (11 km) northeast of a town called Sanger. This area is in the central part of California.
The Story of Kingriver's Post Office
One of the main ways we know about Kingriver is through its post office, which was very important for connecting the community to the outside world.
- The first post office in the area opened in 1856 and was called "King's River." It operated for a few years until 1859.
- Later, in 1865, another post office started up, this time named "Smith's Ferry."
- Just one year later, in 1866, the "Smith's Ferry" post office changed its name back to "King's River."
- Then, in 1895, the name was changed again to "Kingriver," which is the name we use today.
- Finally, the Kingriver post office closed for good in 1905. After this, the community likely became much smaller or disappeared entirely.
