A local teenager named Peter Sollars made an amazing discovery here. He found many different kinds of plants, including some rare ones. These included plants like Butcher's Broom, Small Teasel], and Green Hellebore in the woods. In the meadows, he found beautiful combinations of Lady's Bedstraw, Spiny Restharrow, Great Burnet, Adders Tongue Fern, and Cowslips. Peter told John Dony, who was the County Botanist at the time. John visited the site with Peter and confirmed his exciting findings. Because of these important discoveries, the site became protected in 1984 under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

What Makes This Place Special?

Kings Wood and Glebe Meadows is a unique place because of its special woodlands and meadows.

The Woodlands

The woods here are mostly made up of ash and maple trees. They grow on heavy clay soil. This type of woodland has become quite rare in lowland England. It's like finding a hidden gem! The woods are home to many different kinds of plants and animals. Some plants found here, like wood melick and wood anemone, are signs that this woodland has been around for a very long time. These plants often grow in "ancient woodlands," which are forests that have existed continuously for hundreds of years.

The Meadows

Glebe Meadows is also very special. It has a rich variety of plant species. This is because the meadows have been managed in a traditional way for many years. This traditional care helps different plants to grow and thrive. You can also find some small ponds and old, mature hedgerows in the area. These features add to the diversity of the habitat and provide homes for even more wildlife.
