Location in Cheshire

Kingsley Castle, also known as Castle Cob, is a very old castle site in Kingsley, Cheshire, England. It's not a full castle with walls and towers anymore, but rather a special type of castle called a motte. A motte is a large, artificial mound of earth where a wooden tower or fort once stood.

This site is so important that it's protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. This means it's a historical place that the government wants to keep safe for future generations to learn about.

What is Kingsley Castle?

Kingsley Castle is a motte-and-bailey castle. This was a common type of castle built in medieval times, especially after the Norman Conquest in 1066.

The Motte

The main part of Kingsley Castle that you can still see today is the motte. It's a cone-shaped mound of earth. This mound is about 2.8 metres (9.2 ft) high. At its base, it's about 23 metres (75 ft) wide, and it gets narrower towards the top, where it's about 6 metres (20 ft) wide.

This mound isn't natural; it was built by people using black soil. In the past, some historians thought it might have been a large burial mound, called a barrow, but now we know it's definitely a castle motte.

What was the Bailey?

While the motte is the big mound, a motte-and-bailey castle also had a "bailey." The bailey was a flat area next to the motte, usually surrounded by a ditch and a wooden fence. This area would have held buildings like stables, workshops, and homes for soldiers and servants. At Kingsley Castle, the bailey area is no longer clearly visible, but it would have been an important part of the castle's design.

Who Built Kingsley Castle?

We don't know exactly who built Kingsley Castle or when it was built. Most motte-and-bailey castles were constructed in the 11th or 12th century. They were quick to build and offered good protection, especially for new rulers or lords trying to control an area.

Exploring the Past

Over the years, people interested in history, called antiquarians, have done some small digs at the site. These limited excavations help us learn more about how the castle was built and what life might have been like there.

Kingsley Castle, even though it's just a mound today, gives us a glimpse into the medieval past of Cheshire and how people lived and defended themselves long ago.
