Kingston, Alabama: A Historic Community

Kingston has an interesting past. It was once a very important place for Autauga County.

Early History of Kingston

From 1830 to 1868, Kingston was the county seat of Autauga County. This means it was where the main government offices were located. Important decisions for the county were made here.

However, in 1868, the county seat moved to Prattville. After this, Kingston became almost like a ghost town. A ghost town is a place that used to be busy but is now mostly empty.

Later, a new community started to grow around the home of Edmund Meredith Shackelford. He was an officer who fought in the War of 1812. A post office also operated in Kingston for many years, from 1830 until 1908.

Recent Events: Tornado Impact

On January 12, 2023, Kingston was hit by a very strong tornado. This tornado was rated as an EF3, which means it caused a lot of damage.

Many homes, especially mobile homes, were completely destroyed. Some people were injured, and the community faced a difficult time. This powerful tornado happened just nine days after a weaker tornado, an EF0, also struck the area.
