Newcastle Falcons Newcastle United Reserves Newcastle Thunder |
Kingston Park is a sports stadium in Kingston Park, Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It is used for different sports, mainly rugby union and rugby league games. It is the home stadium for two teams: the RFU Championship rugby union team Newcastle Falcons and the Kingston Press League 1 rugby league team Newcastle Thunder. For a few years, from 2007 to 2009, it was also home to a semi-professional football team called Newcastle Blue Star.
About Kingston Park Stadium
The Newcastle Falcons rugby team, then known as Newcastle Gosforth, moved to Kingston Park in 1990. Before they arrived, the area was known as the Newcastle Chronicle and Journal Sports Ground.
The stadium can hold up to 10,200 people. It was built in different stages over time. The West Stand is the newest and most modern part of the stadium. There are plans to improve the North Stand. This would give fans more shelter from the weather and add more facilities for them. The South Stand, also called the John Smith's stand, is a standing-only area. It offers good protection from the weather and has facilities for fans underneath.
Stadium Pitch
For many years, the stadium had a natural grass playing field. In March 2014, the rugby league authorities approved a plan. The Newcastle Falcons wanted to install a special artificial pitch. This new pitch was put in during the summer of 2014. The local council in Newcastle also approved this plan in May 2014.
Location and Ownership
The closest train station is Bank Foot station. This makes it easy for fans to get to the stadium.
The Newcastle Falcons rugby team now owns Kingston Park stadium. They bought the ground back in June 2015. Before that, Northumbria University owned the stadium. The university had bought it in late 2008.
