Kino (Russian: Кино́, lit. 'cinema, film') was a famous Soviet rock band. They started in Leningrad (which was then part of the Soviet Union) in 1982.
The band was created and led by Viktor Tsoi. He wrote almost all of their songs. Kino released many songs and albums. Their music became very popular, even being shared widely without official releases. When the Soviet Union became more open, a time called Glasnost, Kino became known around the world. In 1989, they even played a concert in New York City. They were also very popular in Russia. Their album Gruppa Krovi is considered one of the best Russian music albums.
Sadly, Viktor Tsoi died in a car accident in 1990. After his death, the band released one more album with songs they had been working on. Then, Kino broke up. In 2012, for what would have been Tsoi's fiftieth birthday, the band members got together again. They recorded a song called 'Ataman'. This song was meant for their last album, but the only recording they had of it was of poor quality.
