Kinuseo Falls is one of the most amazing sights in Monkman Provincial Park. The waterfall is 197 feet (60 metres) tall. This makes it a little taller than Niagara Falls. But it does not have as much water flowing over it as Niagara.

The falls are about 3 km from the Kinuseo Falls Campground. This campground is also inside Monkman Provincial Park. You can walk on a trail from the campground to the falls. Many people also choose to drive there. The campground is also a starting point for exploring more of the park. You can follow the Monkman Pass Trail from there.

What Does "Kinuseo" Mean?

The name "Kinuseo Falls" has an interesting history. In 1920, an explorer named S. Prescott Fay wrote a letter. He said they called the falls "Kinoosao Falls." This name means "fish" in the Cree language.

They chose this name because they saw many trout fish. There were fish both above and below the falls. Fay also wrote that they could not find anyone who knew about these falls before. Even some local Indigenous people had only heard vague stories.

A Brief History of Kinuseo Falls

The first time Kinuseo Falls was written about was in 1906. It appeared on a map made by Robert W. Jones. This map was for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway.

The first known photos of the falls were taken in 1914. This happened during an expedition led by Samuel Prescott Fay. Fay, an American explorer, suggested the name "Kinoosao Falls" in 1915 and again in 1920. This spelling was first used on a map. Later, in 1927 or 1928, Prentiss Gray made the first moving pictures of the falls.
