Kiowa, Nebraska facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Kiowa was once a small town in Thayer County, Nebraska, in the United States. Today, it's known as a ghost town. This means that most or all of its people have left, and many of its buildings are empty or gone.

What is a Ghost Town?

A ghost town is a place that used to be a lively community but is now mostly abandoned. Towns can become ghost towns for many reasons. Sometimes, a mine closes, or a railroad changes its route. Other times, people move away to find better jobs or more opportunities elsewhere. When a town loses its main reason for existing, people slowly leave, and it becomes quiet and empty.

History of Kiowa

Kiowa began as a small community in 1873. That year, a post office was opened there. A post office is a place where people can send and receive mail, and it was often a very important part of a growing town. It helped people stay connected and do business.

The community of Kiowa was named after the Kiowa Indians, a Native American tribe. The post office continued to serve the area for many years, but it eventually closed in 1903. After the post office shut down, fewer and fewer people lived in Kiowa, and it slowly became the ghost town it is today.
