Kirkwood was once a small town located in Tehama County, California. Today, it is no longer a town, but its name lives on through the Kirkwood school district and the Kirkwood cemetery.
This area used to have its own post office, a school, and even a train station. The town grew up around the railway station, which was an important part of its early life.
How Kirkwood Got Its Name
The town was not always called Kirkwood. It received this name when the railway arrived. Before that, the local school was known as Montgomery School. The land was owned by William Wallace Watkins, who was also the postmaster.
The Moving Church
Kirkwood was home to a Methodist church built in 1888. It was built on land that someone had given for free. However, the person who donated the land later claimed they still owned the church building because there was no official deed (a legal document proving ownership). They said the church members would have to pay for it.
To solve this problem, the community came up with a clever plan. One night, while the landowner was away, several people worked together. They placed big log rollers under the church building. Then, they carefully moved the entire church to a different piece of land nearby!
